How to Install a New Switch

There are several reasons for the replacement of a lift at home: The switch does not work or is damaged, changing the color or style of the passage, or by sharing an on / off switch with a dimmer. Whatever the reason, you should be aware of the various types of switches so that they are not overwhelmed when you're at the store buying a new one.

Different styles:

* Toggle Switch - L 'switch basic and most are known to all, which takes its name because the switch "active" at the top and bottom.

* Rocker switch - This switch is a lock that is high up or down (depending on if it is turned on or off) and low in the middle and work like a Teeter-totter. It 'more expensive than a switch and move the line of Decora electrical outlets which are of the same rectangular shape, instead of the traditional look with two-point turn.

* Toggle - Looks the same as above but instead of clicking the switch, you can gradually move to raise the adjustment of light as the light goes on.

* Touch - A touch pad that operates with light pressure.

The switches described above can have different functions and are labeled with one of the following:

* Single pole - a switch operates a light or a set of lights. It has two screws on the side where the cables attach to it. (This option is the most common).

* 3-way switch - This switch is used when you have two options to activate a light or a series of lights. These are located in your home where you have two entrances of a room so you can turn the same light (s) on / off by a door. It has three screws on the side where to connect the cables: one black and two color brass. (Most homes have at least one of these - usually found in the living room, kitchen or at the top and bottom of a staircase.)

* 4-way switch - Same as above, with three options of operating a light or a lamp. Has four screws: usually two blacks and two brass color. When there are three options for running a light (s), two of the three switches are ways and is one of four ways. (These options are not very common.)

Note: All these options (unless the old one is really old) will have a green screw on one end called the ground screw. If your house has its execution through the connection of the metal tube (called power metal pipe or EMT), you can ignore this screw as EMT acts as the earth. Installing the switch

3rd Unscrew the two screws holding the switch to the electrical box. Gently pull the switch towards you out of the box a little 'ways of allowing you to work on it, after the screws are out.

5th Connect the wires to the new switch.

* If you are replacing a single pole switch that has only two wires, not counting the green wire screwed if the old one was, this is an effort not because it does not matter that the two wires going to the screw. Simply wrap one around each screw and torque down.
* If you are replacing a three-way switch, are the wires the way the old man was wired. There are three screws connector, one black and two brass ones. This is a good bet that the wire going to the black screw is black, and the two brass screws have threads of another color (but those two match). Red, blue, orange, purple and yellow colors are the most common of these wires. No matter which of the brass screws to go, as long as the two the same color wires are connected to brass screws.
* For a four-way switch, there are two screws one color (sometimes the words "in") and two screws in a different color (sometimes called "out"). Make sure that the two wires to the two screws of the same color on the old switch to get reconnected to the same color screws on the new one.
6. Push the wires back in the box. Attach the new switch electrical box with screws.
7th Put switch on the rear plate.
8th Go back on the power.

Dimmer switches are a little different just for the fact that instead of having the screws on the side to attach the wire, there are wires (leads), already out on the back. For a single pole, there will be two black wires. Connect one of them to a wire that was connected to the old way and the other dimmer wire to the remaining wire from the old switch. Secure by twisting the wires together with wire nuts, which usually come in Dimmer packaging. Gently tug on a wire, then the other while holding the wire nut to make sure they are safe. It 'a good idea to wrap some electrical tape around the wire nuts and wire so that no three-way dimmer allenti.Le has a black wire and two of the same color wires coming out the back. There are four-way dimmer. If you have three options for running a light (s), and want to be able to dim these lights, you will need to purchase a three-way dimmer and replace one of two or three ways. If you pull out one of the switches and the electrical box is four way, put it back. The dimmer can not go to this port. You should put the dimmer on one of the other two switch places.
